This recording begins a few minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve. The first identifiable sounds are of shoes clomping on the pavement as someone runs past on the sidewalk. Snippets of conversations wander in and out. A firework explodes. The J train rumbles by a block away. New York City sounds abound. Then, in the distance, we can hear a countdown, aware of our remove from the revelers. It is now 2024, and voices, sirens, the wind in the tress, and the music in passing cars signal that the world is still turning and the city still hums along. Recorded from my second floor window in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
